This book is a narrow minded, religious opinion piece on addiction, and lacks much research to back up its aggressive manipulative language about addiction and someone who is struggling with addiction. And as a textbook, clearly the writer is a Christian, and uses 12 step modality brainwashing, which I assume is helpful?for some people? But the science in this book is cherry picked and what is used is misleading, and so this book shouldn't be used for class setting. To have a chemical use and abuse book that doesn't at least mention the Adverse Childhood Experience Study as a lens to help understand addiction feels like it misses the relevant scientific research studies that have come out in the last 15 years. Avoid this book at all costs, there are way better books out there on addiction counseling that have lots of research to back up different modalities to help people that won't be so traumatizing to someone struggling.
