The Spanish Civil War (1936—1939) was a confrontation between supporters of Spain's democratically elected Republic—including peasants, communists, union workers, and anarchists—and an alliance of nationalist Army rebels and upper-class forces, including the Catholic Church and landlords, led by General Francisco Franco. In the political climate of the time, this civil war became the focus of foreign interests advocating conflicting ideas of democracy and fascism. Spain became a training ground where Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy tested military techniques intended for use in a yet to be declared wider world war. Although most Western nations embraced a neutrality pact, individual volunteers from around the world, including the United States, made their way to Spain to support the Republican cause.Among the Americans was Robert Hale Merriman, a scholar who had been studying international economics in Europe. He and his wife, Marion, joined volunteers from fifty-four countries in International Brigades. Merriman became the first commander of the Americans; Abraham Lincoln Battalion and a leader among the International Brigades. I read the reviews submitted for this website and I am not sure where the two anti-Spanish Republic, anti-left reviewers are coming from other than to go on to make unfounded claims and allegations against the intent of the book. In fact, I don't even think they read the book. These days we live in such a polarized world that some subjects like the Spanish Civil War and the Abraham Lincoln Brigade serve as lightning rods for political/ideological battles. I see that some of that has seeped into the Amazon.com review section. How sad.I won't summarize the book as that is already included here, but I found the narrative to be a good one. We witness a woman recount her marriage to Robert Merriman, describe his immense interest in using economics to find a solution to the Depression, lionize and agonize over his decision to go to Russia and then to Spain to fight Franco's fascist-supported Nationalists. It is a personal narrative mixed in with descriptions taken from personal accounts of members of the Lincoln Brigade to portray the hellish conditions that these brave individuals encountered in Spain. Contrary to what many people may believe Robert Merriman was not a Communist, nor where many of this compatriots in the International Brigades; they were idealists, and they can hardly be condemned for that.I have an immense interest in the Spanish Civil War and the Lincoln Brigade and this book is indispensable for anyone interested in either of these topics.Disagree with Robert Merriman and the Lincoln Brigades if you must, but RESPECT them for their willingness to commit to a cause that their government would not support. We should salute them for their sacrifice. I don't think we will ever see that kind of commitment or sacrifice from non-military personnel again.I tip my hat to Robert Merriman and the Abraham Lincoln Brigades. They honored us all with their commitment to democracy and freedom and opposition to fascism.
